La prensa internacional reconoció el pase de Inglaterra, el buen juego de México y la pasión de la afición mexicana en el Estadio Ciudad de México a pesar de la derrota del Tri.
Medios ingleses como The Sun y el Daily Mail celebraron el triunfo de los Tres Leones como una hazaña histórica: "La mayor victoria de Inglaterra en un Mundial desde 1966" donde sobrevivieron ante la presión del Azteca.
La BBC señaló el encuentro como un "partido icónico en un estadio icónico", donde Inglaterra ganó por "pura voluntad" en medio de un ambiente que era un auténtico hervidero y donde México jamás bajó los brazos atacando con intensidad hasta el último segundo.
