Tras un accidentado arranque en Silverstone, Sergio Pérez hizo un carrerón, remontó 16 posiciones para finalizar segundo en el Gran Premio de Gran Bretaña que se llevó Carlos Sainz (Ferrari). Esta fue la primera victoria del español en la máxima categoría del automovilismo, algo que tardó casi 10 años en llegar.
Pérez cayó hasta la última posición y, poco a poco, fue remontando posiciones hasta que la suerte le sonrió cuando, a falta de 12 giros para el final, Esteban Ocon (Alpine) se quedó en la recta principal de Silverstone y provocó un Safety Car que le dio la oportunidad de meterse al podio.
Y es que la carrera se puso a cuesta arriba para el mexicano de Red Bull tras el reinicio después del accidente que dejó fuera a Guanyu Zhou (Alfa Romeo), George Russell (Mercedes) y Alexander Albon (Williams).
El piloto chino de Alfa Romeo dio un tremendo susto, pues su auto recorrió gran parte de la primera curva boca abajo y terminó saltando la primera barrera de seguridad del circuito de Silverstone, por lo que tuvo que ser trasladado al centro médico, donde posteriormente fue dado de alta.
Al no haberse completado la primera vuelta de la carrera cuando se decretó la bandera roja, se repitió la salida de nuevo con Sainz en la pole, Verstappen segundo y, de nuevo, con los primeros siete puestos tal como estaban.

Pérez tuvo una buena rearrancada, intentó rebasar a Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), pero daño su alerón delantero, tuvo que ingresar a boxes para cambiarlo y caer hasta la última posición.
A partir de la vuelta 6, Checo comenzó a remontar lugares, mientras que Sainz, Verstappen, Leclerc y Hamilton se repartieron el liderato del GP. Para el giro 20, el mexicano se colocó entre los primeros 10 y siguió empujando por adelantar más sitios, algo que se dio hasta la vuelta 35 cuando ya alcanzaba el cuarto puesto.

La carrera se volvió un suspiro en los últimos 12 giros, puesto que el ingreso de Safety Car ayudó a cerrar las distancias entre todos los pilotos, con Leclerc, Sainz, Hamilton y Checo peleando por el triunfo.
En el giro 42, la locura estalló en Silverstone cuando Sainz rebasó a Leclerc y Checo a Hamilton, pero el inglés de Mercedes no se dejó y aprovechó la batalla entre el monegasco y el mexicano para rebasar a ambos en la siguiente vuelta.
El piloto de Red Bull no dio su brazo a torcer en el momento en que Hamilton fue agresivo para retomar, defender su segunda posición e intentó alcanzar a Sainz, quien aprovechó la batalla entre los tres para poner tierra de por medio.

Al final, Sainz se quedó con el triunfo, Pérez fue segundo y Hamilton completó el sorprendente podio. Esta fue la sexta ocasión en la temporada que Checo finalizó una carrera entre los primeros tres.
"Fue un gran regreso. No nos dimos por vencidos y seguimos empujando y luego llegó la oportunidad al final y simplemente [fuimos] a por ella. Fue una gran pelea, primero con Charles, luego con Lewis. Sentí que tenía el puesto y Lewis estaba allí. Fue solo unas últimas vueltas épicas, pero fue una buena pelea", expresó el mexicano al finalizar la prueba.
Con el resultado, Pérez redujo a 34 puntos la desventaja que tiene con Max Verstappen en el Mundial de Pilotos después de 10 carreras. Ahora la F1 se trasladará a Austria para la undécima etapa del campeonato, que se disputará el próximo 8-10 de julio.
