Max Verstappen ganó el Gran Premio de Mónaco, la séptima ronda del Mundial de Fórmula 1, de punta a punta. Checo Pérez tuvo una carrera de pesadilla donde se pegó en dos ocasiones, ingresó cinco veces a boxes y terminó en la posición 16.
El neerlandés de Red Bull salió desde la pole y no tuvo problemas para gestionar al único piloto capaz de minarle, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), que finaliza segundo. Esteban Ocon (Alpine) dio la sorpresa y subió al podio.
Fue tan mala la carrera de Pérez que Verstappen le rebasó en un par de ocasiones durante los 78 giros al circuito callejero de Montecarlo. El mexicano arrancó con todo y logró adelantar a Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo), pero por estrategia, Checo, Zhou y Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) —este último por un contacto con Logan Sargeant (Williams)— pasaron por pits para montar neumáticos duros e ir hasta el final de la carrera.

Sin embargo, Pérez entró en desesperación cuando su compañero de equipo le sacó un giro en la vuelta 31. Checo rebasó a Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), pero cortando la chicana a la salida del túnel, por lo que tuvo que devolver la posición al canadiense.
Un par de vueltas más tarde, el piloto tapatío tuvo un contacto con Kevin Magnussen (Haas) a la salida de esa misma parte del circuito, donde el Red Bull perdió parte de su alerón delantero, forzó a la segunda detención de Checo y volvió a la penúltima posición.

La llegada de la lluvia puso un poco de emoción en la parte media de la carrera. Algunos conductores habían entrado en boxes por los neumáticos medios equivocados poco antes de la fuerte lluvia y se deslizaron en pista. Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) se pegó contra el muro, Magnussen perdió el control al final de la recta y Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) se retiró tras dañar su monoplaza.
En la punta, Verstappen dominaba, Alonso fue el primero de los líderes en detenerse y apostó por cambiar sus neumáticos duros por medios, descartando los intermedios, pero la lluvia se mantuvo y resultó ser la decisión incorrecta. Pese a ello, el español mantuvo su segundo lugar, mientras que Ocon seguía lejos de acercársele.

Pérez intentó remontar sitios con los neumáticos de lluvia, pero tuvo su segundo contacto del día —ahora con George Russell (Mercedes), quien tras despistarse le pegó al mexicano— lo cual le perjudicaría. El resto de la carrera no hubo grandes cambios: Verstappen sacó más ventaja a Alonso y Ocon, mientras que Checo tendría su última parada (la quinta) para cambiar a neumáticos intermedios y cerrar la prueba.
Con este resultado, Max Verstappen extendió su ventaja sobre Checo en el Mundial de Pilotos a 29 unidades -144 por 105—, pero ahora el mexicano ve cómo Fernando Alonso se le acerca a 12 puntos en la tercera posición. Para la próxima semana, la Fórmula 1 tendrá su octava carrera del año en el Gran Premio de España en el circuito de Montmeló el 4 de junio.
